What to measure before using the checklist
Facing and room position are different inputs. For this checklist, house facing is the direction you face when standing inside the main door and looking out. Entrance direction is the zone containing the entrance on your plan. Kitchen and master-bedroom directions are the zones containing those rooms, not the direction a person faces while cooking or sleeping.
Use a plan with a reliable north mark. If a room spans more than one zone, or you cannot identify the entrance zone, do not guess to obtain a result. Review the plan first. The House Direction Finder converts a known compass reading to a direction; it does not locate rooms automatically.
How the checklist match is calculated
The four answers contribute up to 100 points. These are the site's existing editorial weights, not a scientifically validated scale or a percentage probability of a good outcome. The weights are retained so completed results remain comparable with the previous version.
- Facing, up to 26: North, East or North-East receive 26; West or North-West receive 18; South, South-West or South-East receive 14.
- Entrance zone, up to 26: the same groups receive 26, 18 or 14 respectively.
- Kitchen zone, up to 24: South-East or East receive 24; North-West receives 18; other directions receive 12.
- Master-bedroom zone, up to 24: South-West or West receive 24; North-West receives 18; other directions receive 12.
All four answers are required. For example, North facing, an East entrance zone, a South-East kitchen and a South-West master bedroom produce 100%. South facing, a South entrance zone, a North kitchen and an East master bedroom produce 52%. Neither number establishes whether a building is safe, comfortable or a suitable purchase.
What the result leaves out
The checklist does not inspect daylight, climate, drainage, fire safety, accessibility, structural condition, room dimensions or the quality of construction. A high match can coexist with serious practical problems. A lower match can describe a comfortable, well-maintained home. Traditional preferences vary, and another system may use different weights.
Read the suggestions alongside the whole layout. Do not relocate plumbing, remove walls or buy remedies simply to increase the number. For a fixed apartment, review reversible improvements and professional advice where needed. The Room Placement Checker provides more detailed, non-numeric guidance for individual rooms.
Privacy and common questions
Are these answers saved?
This checklist does not save or send your direction selections. A reset clears the form and result. Site analytics and advertising operate separately, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Why does the result disappear when an answer changes?
A previous result would no longer describe the selected answers. Complete the revised selections and review them again.
Can I use the match to choose between properties?
Not on its own. Compare actual layout, condition, access, maintenance and household needs first. Treat this checklist as a discussion aid rather than a buying recommendation.
